Omega-3 fats are often presented as an easy answer for the heart, brain, joints and inflammation. That makes fish-oil capsules sound like something everyone should begin taking after the age of 40.
The reality is more useful—and more balanced.
Omega-3 fatty acids are important nutrients, but eating fish and swallowing a fish-oil capsule are not automatically equivalent. Seafood provides omega-3s together with protein, vitamins and minerals. Supplements provide selected fatty acids in a concentrated form, and the evidence for their benefits depends on the person, the reason for using them and the dose.
For many adults, the best starting point is food. A supplement may be reasonable when oily fish is rarely eaten, a plant-based source of DHA or EPA is preferred, or a healthcare professional recommends a specific product for a defined purpose.
What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Omega-3s are a family of polyunsaturated fats. The three types most often discussed are:
- ALA: alpha-linolenic acid
- EPA: eicosapentaenoic acid
- DHA: docosahexaenoic acid

These figures apply to ALA. The United States has not established a general daily requirement for EPA and DHA for all healthy adults.

- Include fish—particularly oily fish—regularly if it fits your diet.
- Include plant sources of ALA as part of a varied eating pattern.
- Consider a supplement according to your actual diet, health and purpose rather than taking one automatically because you are over 40.

The amount of EPA and DHA varies considerably between species and products. Oily fish usually provides more than lean fish such as cod or tilapia.

Is Eating Fish Better Than Taking Fish Oil?

EPA and DHA can lower triglyceride levels, but treatment for high triglycerides should not be confused with casually buying a standard fish-oil capsule.
The American Heart Association has concluded that 4 grams per day of prescription omega-3 can lower triglycerides in appropriate patients. This refers to high-dose, regulated prescription products used under clinical guidance—not an instruction to take several ordinary capsules on your own.
Different prescription formulations have produced different cardiovascular outcomes in clinical trials. A clinician may also need to address alcohol intake, diabetes, thyroid disease, weight, diet and medicines that can contribute to elevated triglycerides.
If a blood test shows high triglycerides, ask:
- How high is the result?
- Was the test fasting or non-fasting?

- Do I need lifestyle changes, medication or both?

Do not replace prescribed cholesterol or triglyceride medication with a shop-bought supplement without medical guidance.
How to Read an Omega-3 Supplement Label
The number on the front of the bottle can be misleading.
A capsule labelled “1,000 mg fish oil” does not necessarily provide 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA. Much of that total may be other fats.
Turn the package around and check:
EPA and DHA Per Serving
Look for the separate amounts of EPA and DHA. Add them together if a combined figure is not already provided.
For example:
- Fish oil: 1,000 mg
- EPA: 180 mg
- DHA: 120 mg
This product provides 300 mg of EPA plus DHA—not 1,000 mg.
Serving Size
Check whether the listed amount comes from one capsule, two capsules or a larger daily serving.
Source
The product may contain fish oil, krill oil, cod-liver oil or algae oil.
Cod-liver oil can also contain vitamins A and D. That makes it different from a standard fish-oil product. Taking it alongside other vitamin A or D supplements may unintentionally increase your total intake.
Quality Information
Look for a clear ingredient list, batch information, storage instructions, expiry date and meaningful quality-control information. Third-party certification can add reassurance, but no logo turns an unnecessary supplement into a necessary one.
Freshness and Storage
Follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions. Do not use a product beyond its expiry date or continue taking an oil with an unusually rancid smell or taste.

Krill Oil

Who Should Be Careful With Omega-3 Supplements?
