Quick answer: Taking zinc supplements every day can help when your intake is inadequate or your body has difficulty absorbing zinc. But an everyday capsule is not automatically necessary. Before buying, check the amount of zinc, what you already take and how long you plan to use it. A supplement should fill a specific gap.
Zinc appears in multivitamins, immunity formulas and products marketed for hair or skin. It is easy to add a separate capsule without realising that your existing routine already contains it. Here is how to make a more informed choice.

What does zinc actually do?
Zinc helps support normal immune function, wound healing and the production of DNA and proteins. Getting enough matters; taking extra does not guarantee stronger immunity. Food sources include meat, seafood, dairy, beans, nuts and whole grains. Start by looking at the foods you regularly eat.

Who might benefit from a zinc supplement?
A closer review can be useful for people with a restricted diet or conditions that affect nutrient absorption. Some digestive disorders and gastrointestinal surgery can increase the risk of inadequate zinc. People eating vegetarian or vegan diets may also need to pay attention to intake because compounds in plant foods can reduce absorption.
These situations call for an individual assessment rather than an automatic prescription. Write down a typical week of meals and take photographs of your supplement labels. That gives a clinician or dietitian something concrete to review.
Hair changes, tiredness or frequent illness do not establish zinc deficiency on their own. If you have persistent symptoms, ask about their possible causes before choosing a supplement from a marketing claim.
How much zinc is too much?
For context, US adult recommended intakes are 11 mg daily for men and 8 mg for women, with different needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding. These are nutritional needs, not recommended capsule strengths.
Upper limits are also different from targets. European guidance lists an adult upper limit of 25 mg per day; US guidance uses 40 mg per day. Both refer to total zinc from food and supplements during ongoing use. The difference between these limits is not a reason to aim for the higher number. Clinician-supervised treatment may use a different plan.
Consider this simple example: a multivitamin supplying 10 mg plus a separate 25 mg zinc capsule provides 35 mg before counting food. Looking at each bottle separately hides that total.
Make one list that includes multivitamins, mineral blends, zinc lozenges and standalone capsules. Read the zinc amount per serving, then check how many capsules make up that serving. Our guide to choosing supplements wisely offers more label checks.
Why does copper matter?
High zinc intake can interfere with copper absorption. Prolonged excessive supplementation can contribute to copper deficiency, which may cause anaemia and neurological problems. This is one reason to avoid treating a high-dose bottle as a permanent daily habit.
Do not automatically add copper to compensate for zinc you may not need. First review the zinc dose, the reason for taking it and the intended duration. If someone has prescribed zinc, ask when that plan should be reassessed.
A real product example: read the dose before buying

View Body Attack Zinc Bisglycinate and its label. The current product provides 25 mg zinc per capsule, alongside other ingredients. Its label advises against combining it with other zinc supplements.
That 25 mg capsule alone reaches the European adult upper limit before food is included. It is therefore not our general recommendation for indefinite daily use. If supplementation is appropriate, ask whether a lower dose or a defined treatment period would better suit you. “Bisglycinate” describes the form; it does not remove the need to check the dose.
Life Extension option: Compare Life Extension Zinc Lozenges, Citrus-Orange, at Life Extension UK (affiliate link). The current label lists 18.75 mg zinc per lozenge. This is a lower amount than the Body Attack capsule, but food and other supplements still count towards your daily total. Compare these as alternatives; do not combine them. Confirm the current label and whether the dose suits your needs before buying.
Use the product page to compare the complete ingredients, serving size and directions. You can also visit our supplement guide to explore options that match a specific goal. Buying a product should follow the decision about your needs.
Five questions before taking zinc every day
- What is the reason? A dietary gap or a clinician’s plan is more useful than a vague promise of better health.
- What is the total? Count zinc in every product you use, including occasional lozenges.
- What is the duration? Set a review point instead of repeatedly ordering the same bottle.
- Could it interact? Zinc can affect some antibiotics and penicillamine. Ask a pharmacist whether doses need separating.
- What would change the plan? Agree how you will review tolerance, intake and the original reason for use.
The useful question is not simply whether zinc is “good.” It is whether this product, at this dose, fits your circumstances.
