Brazil nuts and selenium supplements can both contribute to your selenium intake. If you enjoy the nuts and already take a multivitamin, the useful question is how everything fits together across your day.
This article provides general health education and does not replace individual medical advice.
Why Brazil nuts deserve their own portion check
Selenium supports normal thyroid function. The US adult recommended intake is 55 micrograms daily. NIH lists roughly 68–91 micrograms in one Brazil nut, though the amount varies. Fish, eggs, meat and grains also contribute. That makes these nuts unusually concentrated compared with an ordinary mixed-nut snack. NIH selenium fact sheet.

You do not need to turn breakfast into a laboratory exercise. Start by noticing your habits: a handful of Brazil nuts, a daily mineral capsule and a multivitamin are three separate entries in the same routine. Writing them down makes the pattern easier to discuss than trying to remember each bottle during an appointment.
Count the total before choosing a supplement
The European Food Safety Authority sets an adult upper intake level of 255 micrograms per day from all sources. The US upper limit is 400 micrograms. These are long-term safety ceilings, not amounts to aim for. Different authorities use different assessments; neither number means that taking more than you need produces a better result.
Here is an illustrative calculation using the NIH nut estimate:
| Source | Estimated selenium |
|---|---|
| One supplement serving | 200 micrograms |
| One Brazil nut | 68–91 micrograms |
| Combined, before other food | 268–291 micrograms |
That combination already exceeds EFSA’s adult ceiling. It is a calculation, not a measurement of your own intake, because nuts vary. One day above a ceiling does not establish poisoning; the practical issue is making a high combined intake a repeated habit. EFSA dietary reference values.
Make a useful label record
Look for selenium in the nutrient panel, then record the amount per daily serving. A serving may contain more than one capsule. Keep the units as micrograms: “mcg” and “µg” mean the same thing. Photograph the label so you can check the exact formulation again when you reorder.
- List your multivitamin and any separate mineral products.
- Add hair, skin, nail and thyroid-support formulas to the review.
- Note how often you eat Brazil nuts, including those in mixed bags.
- Bring the list to a pharmacist or clinician before combining products.

For a targeted selenium plan agreed with your healthcare professional, Life Extension Super Selenium Complex & Vitamin E offers 200 micrograms of selenium per serving in a vegetarian capsule. Its product page provides the formula for an informed discussion about dose and your food intake. This strength is best considered within that individual plan.
If you are organising your wider vitamin and mineral routine, Body Attack Daily Stack Multivitamin offers a combined formula with vitamins and minerals including magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc. Explore the current label with your routine in mind, and record any selenium listed on the pack before adding a separate product.
When individual advice matters
Persistent hair loss, brittle nails, nausea or a metallic taste can occur with excessive selenium, but also have other causes. Seek medical advice rather than diagnosing yourself from symptoms. Review supplements with your clinician if you have a thyroid condition, take regular medicines or are pregnant. Adult figures should not be applied to children.
A clear plan should answer three questions: what need are you addressing, what daily amount fits that need, and when will you review it? Keep that plan beside your supplement list so future purchases stay connected to your actual nutrition goals.
